Wednesday Recap (February 29)

One of the things I really like about youth ministry, in particular, is that no one night in youth group is ever the same.  There will be some nights that are super serious and then the next Wednesday night you can’t get anyone to really focus in on whats going on.  This is good because it gives variety to whats happening and maybe even lightens the mood a bit from the week before.

Last night was one of those nights that was far from serious, far from focused and all together one of those nights where you wonder if anyone learned anything.  However it was a good night just to be a bit more relaxed and have some fun.  We even were able to use Talladega Nights as an example for the lesson.

We covered Philippians 2:2-11

It reads:

Christ’s Example of Humility

2 So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy,  complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.  Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,[a]  who, though he was inthe form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant,[b] being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.  Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

The main idea is of course simple, be humble.  However Paul needs to press them on the issue of being humble because they are taking the glory for themselves and not being loving or caring for others.  Paul reminds them that they need to be like their Savior.  Jesus becomes human and becomes like a “servant”.  He humbles himself in order to obey the Father and to also save us.
Though this is not said by Paul we can connect the dots and see that the Philippines are beginning to make a Jesus for themselves (thus the Ricky Bobby Clip).  A savior they are comfortable with and not one that wants them to follow after His example.  They are good at the things they do and want to be able to take credit for them while at the same time keeping all that comes with their success.
Paul gives them, and also us, a great example of what it looks like to truly follow after Jesus.  The question that we should ask ourselves is are we creating our own Jesus or are we following after the Jesus that Scripture reveals to us!
